CaSO4
Calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is a component of many biomaterials, which are playing an increasingly important role in the surgical treatment of bone and joint diseases. Heraeus specializes in the development of materials containing active ingredients for localized use in orthopedic surgery for a variety of indications. For example, our Palacos® bone cement has set the standard for over 50 years for firmly and reliably anchoring prostheses to bone in replacement joints. Whether a result of infection or traumatic injury, bone loss poses another serious challenge for surgeons. For this problem, orthopedic surgery utilizes innovative carrier materials that can be absorbed and transformed into the body’s own tissue. The goal is to completely repair bone defects while at the same time preventing infection.
