Bone cements for spinal surgery
Vertebral fractures can cause severe back pain. They may be due to trauma or due to a weakening of the vertebra as a result of osteoporosis, lytic lesions from metastatic or primary tumors, or infection.1
The outcome of conservative treatment methods are often not satisfactory. Surgical treatments with internal force-bearing elements place a strain on the patient. Thus many surgeons and particularly radiologist prefer the minimally invasive filling and stabilisation of vertebral bodies via vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty. Both procedures involve the placement of cement into the fractured vertebra through a small skin incision under X-ray guidance.2
